Design as therapy: emotional dynamics of aerospace engineering

As a designer at NASA JPL, Joyce wears many hats – researcher, designer, interviewer, UXer, pixel pusher, collaborator, translator, educator, strategist, leader – and her engineer coworkers believe that designers just make things pretty. Joyce works with system engineers to build a software suite that helps JPL model new mission concepts. To do that, she has to build trust to listen to engineers gripe about historical tools, methods, and processes. A lot of times, they talk endlessly about problems and pain points. Joyce is their therapist.

Designing new possibilities

How can design build our capacity to imagine new possibilities?
In this session Alice will share methods and insights weaving the threads of her practice situated between design, culture, art, and narrative forms to share how design can be a tool for shaping social change.

Independent Researcher

Alice is a research-based designer, host, and publisher who has developed an expansive practice that is equal parts experimental, referential, and relational, existing at the intersections of art, design, community building, and food. Among these expressions, Alice is interested in building infrastructures for convening that open up our capacity to feel deeply and orient towards liberatory futures. Alice co-founded Deem Journal, and is currently head of Public Discourse at re:arc institute.
